Walter Skinner
From dismissive supervisor to steadfast ally who finally sees the truth.
Walter Sergei Skinner is an FBI Assistant Director portrayed by Mitch Pileggi on The X-Files and its spin-off The Lone Gunmen. He supervised the X-Files office, handling unresolved cases of mysterious or supernatural circumstances. While Fox Mulder viewed these files as proof of a conspiracy, Skinner initially dismissed such beliefs in extraterrestrial phenomena. Over time, however, he grew to respect and agree with Mulder, who is finally proven correct when Skinner sees an alien spacecraft in "Requiem"." Skinner began as a recurring character through the first eight seasons before becoming a main cast member in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh seasons.

Lore & Background
Skinner is a former Marine scarred by an incident where he killed a boy at close range. He has been treated at a sleep disorder clinic for recurring dreams of an old woman, which may be either a hallucination arising from drug use during Vietnam or a succubus. His hobbies include jogging and boxing; his combat skills are proven when he outfights Mulder and defends himself against Alex Krycek. Administratively, Skinner took personal charge of the X-Files in the latter half of Season 1, replacing Section Chief Scott Blevins.
Initially unsure if he was independent or controlled by figures like the "Cigarette Smoking Man," he eventually broke free to become a loyal ally. He was later covertly infected with nanotechnology that gave Alex Krycek leverage to control him, until, two years later, Skinner fatally shot Krycek during an attempt by Krycek on Mulder's life. Skinner also acted as Mulder's lawyer at his murder trial, and later he and Deputy Director Alvin Kersh confront the "Toothpick Man" after Doggett and Reyes find the X-Files office emptied out, which results in another, apparently permanent, closing of the X-Files division.
Reader's Guide
Walter Skinner serves as FBI Assistant Director, initially acting as a skeptical supervisor to Agents Mulder and Scully before evolving into their primary protector within the bureau. His arc involves transitioning from a dismissive figure to one who accepts the truth of alien phenomena after seeing a spacecraft in "Requiem." Key to his role is his ability to navigate internal FBI politics, often saving his agents' lives from conspirators like the Cigarette Smoking Man and Alex Krycek.
He endured physical trauma, including being infected with nanotechnology and stabbed by Davey James, yet maintained his loyalty to Mulder and Scully even when it meant disobeying Director Alvin Kersh or facing a deadly car attack in "My Struggle IV." Pileggi had been passed over for earlier roles because he shaved his head; when he auditioned for Skinner he was in a grumpy mood and had let his hair grow back. His relationship with his agents deepened significantly after Season 7, allowing him to take on more active roles as a main character from Season 9 onward.
