Monica Reyes

Doggett's longtime friend and partner on the X-Files, and a believer.

Monica Julieta Reyes, portrayed by Annabeth Gish, is an FBI Special Agent who works with her longtime friend and partner John Doggett in the X-Files office. Introduced in the eighth season, she became a main character throughout the ninth season, made a guest appearance in the tenth-season finale and recurred in season eleven. She was conceived to eventually replace Dana Scully as the series' female lead, and was written as a believer to contrast with the sceptical Doggett.

Lore & Background

Reyes was born and raised in Mexico City, speaks fluent Spanish, and studied folklore and mythology at Brown University, with a master's degree in Religious Studies. She enrolled in the FBI in 1990, and in the New York City field office became romantically involved with agent Brad Follmer. She was the head investigator in the kidnapping of seven-year-old Luke Doggett, son of NYPD officer John Doggett, who was found dead with no suspect ever apprehended. In 2001 she protected the pregnant Scully, driving her to a remote location in Georgia and helping deliver her child, and then became Doggett's partner on the X-Files.

Reader's Guide

Sometime after 2002, Reyes left the FBI and chose to work for the Smoking Man as a double agent. In the season 11 finale "My Struggle IV", she is with the Smoking Man when Walter Skinner shoots her dead. Writer Frank Spotnitz saw her as like Mulder in her optimism and faith but more spiritual, with a more New Age-like view.
