Eugene Victor Tooms

The immortal mutant who squeezes through impossibly narrow spaces to feed on human livers.

Eugene Victor Tooms, portrayed by Doug Hutchison, is an immortal genetic mutant who subsists entirely on human livers and can elongate and contort his body to inhuman degrees, hibernating for 30 years between his feeding periods. He is the killer of the first-season episode "Squeeze", the first monster-of-the-week episode of The X-Files, and returns in the 1994 episode "Tooms".

Lore & Background

In "Squeeze", Mulder and Scully investigate a series of killings in Baltimore whose victims' livers have been removed, and Mulder links them to murder sprees from 1933 and 1963. They catch Tooms climbing through the air vents of an office building, and Mulder shows that his elongated fingerprints match those at the crime scenes. In Tooms' former apartment building they find a nest made of newspaper and bile and trophy items taken from his victims. Tooms chooses Scully as his final victim and breaks into her home, but Mulder arrives, and Tooms is incarcerated in a sanitarium.

Reader's Guide

In "Tooms", he is released and resumes his job as a dog catcher while staying at a halfway house. After framing Mulder for assaulting him and obtaining a restraining order, Tooms murders and feeds on his psychologist. Mulder and Scully track him to beneath a mall built over his old apartment complex, where, after a confrontation with Mulder, he is trapped beneath an escalator and crushed to death when it is activated.
