Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment

A crossover hack and slash set during the Imprisoning War.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a hack and slash game released in 2025. It was developed by Koei Tecmo's AAA Games Studio and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch 2. Like earlier entries in the series, it blends the setting and characters of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda franchise with the combat style of Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors games. Its narrative is set during the Imprisoning War referenced in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023). The game launched on November 6, 2025, and received generally favorable reviews.

In gameplay, the player controls one of up to four characters assigned to a mission, completing objectives while fighting large groups of enemies. Each character has a unique moveset built from combos of weak and strong attacks. They also possess a personal set of unique attacks, which are powerful moves that require a recharge period before reuse. Zonai devices are available, draining a battery while active. A Warrior Special, charged by dealing and receiving damage, unleashes heavy area-of-effect damage. Alongside weak monsters, players face captains and bosses. These tougher enemies have a weak-point gauge that appears after an attack or when forced out by specific actions. Depleting this gauge triggers a weak-point smash, dealing massive damage and often finishing the enemy. Methods to force the gauge include a perfect dodge leading to a flurry rush, or using Zonai devices at the right moment—like a Flame Emitter against an ice-affinity foe or near grass. Enemies may also use dangerous, unblockable attacks that are vulnerable to corresponding unique attacks or Zonai devices. These counterattacks and certain cooperative moves boost the Sync gauge. When two characters have full Sync gauges and are close, they can perform a Sync Strike, which varies depending on which character initiates it; some pairings have unique Sync Strikes. Outside battle, players use spoils to upgrade characters by aiding the people of ancient Hyrule and improving weapons with Zonaite Steel.

The plot begins when Princess Zelda, during her encounter with the unsealed Demon King Ganondorf, is teleported back in time to Hyrule's founding era by a secret stone's power. Her ancestors, King Rauru and Queen Sonia, find her and help search for a way home.

Lore & Background

The game's plot follows Princess Zelda, who is teleported in time to Hyrule's founding era after encountering the unsealed Demon King Ganondorf. She is found by King Rauru and Queen Sonia, and aids Rauru's royal duties while training her light and time powers with Sonia. During an expedition with Mineru, a series of inactive Forbidden Constructs are unearthed—self-aware humanoid weapons that had rebelled against and exterminated most of the Zonai race. Ganondorf leads the Gerudo in an attack on Hyrule Castle, then betrays his subordinate Ardi, frames her, and later kills Sonia to take her secret stone, transforming into the Demon King. Rauru's forces rally the leaders of Hyrule's allied tribes, and a benign Forbidden Construct activated by the Korok wanderer Calamo is named the Knight Construct by Zelda. After defeating the archfiends and witnessing the Forbidden Construct's devastation of Korok Forest, Rauru and the sages attack Ganondorf at Hyrule Castle, eventually luring him into the Depths where Rauru sacrifices himself to seal Ganondorf away. The Knight Construct destroys the Forbidden Construct but perishes, and Calamo roots as a tree beside its remains. Zelda's lady-in-waiting Lenalia designs murals chronicling the war, and at Mineru's request omits the Knight Construct from records. In a post-credits scene, the tree grows extremely large with one of the construct's pieces embedded in its trunk.

Reader's Guide

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is significant as the third Hyrule Warriors title and the first to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2. It expands on the lore of Tears of the Kingdom by depicting the Imprisoning War in full, introducing new characters such as the Knight Construct, Calamo, and the archfiends. The game's Sync Strike mechanic, inspired by the hand touch in Tears of the Kingdom, allows two characters with full Sync gauges to unleash cooperative attacks, with certain pairings yielding unique Sync Strikes. The game received generally favorable reviews and sold over one million copies worldwide by January 2026. Its development was overseen by Tears of the Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and Zelda franchise producer Eiji Aonuma, ensuring close narrative ties to the source game. The inclusion of Zonai devices and weak-point gauge mechanics carries forward elements from previous Hyrule Warriors titles while integrating new systems like the Sync gauge and counterattacks.
