The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

A remaster of the 1998 classic for Nintendo 3DS.

In 2011, Nintendo released a remastered version of its classic 1998 game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for the Nintendo 3DS. Developed by Grezzo, this action-adventure title updated the original with improved graphics, stereoscopic 3D, and several quality-of-life adjustments. It also included the mirrored, rearranged dungeons from the Master Quest version. A digital edition became available through the Nintendo eShop in 2012. The game was both a critical and commercial hit, selling over 6.44 million copies worldwide by December 2022, making it the thirteenth best-selling title on the 3DS. A follow-up remaster, Majora's Mask 3D, arrived in 2015.

The core gameplay remains faithful to the original, with notable additions. Players manage items via the touchscreen and can play ocarina songs using it as well. The system's gyroscope allows for aiming bows, boomerangs, and other tools in first-person mode, though analog controls remain an option. The 3DS version includes both the original game and the modified Master Quest, which features a mirrored overworld. A new "Boss Challenge" mode lets players fight all bosses individually or in sequence; the Master Quest version mirrors the arenas and doubles enemy damage. "Visions," short hint videos, are accessible through Sheikah Stones found in Link's house and the Temple of Time. The Stone of Agony from the N64 game was replaced by the Shard of Agony, which uses a sound cue instead of a rumble effect.

The plot follows the hero Link as he travels through Hyrule to stop Ganondorf from claiming the Triforce. Link moves between time periods, explores dungeons, and awakens sages to seal away the villain. Playing songs on an ocarina is essential for progression.

Development began after a tech demo at E3 2010, which Shigeru Miyamoto initially described as a possibility rather than a confirmed project. Nintendo of America later announced the full production via Twitter. Miyamoto noted the timing was deliberate, aiming to reach players who had experienced the original in their youth and were now in their mid-20s, and to showcase Hyrule's scenery in stereoscopic 3D for greater immersion. The game runs at 30 frames per second, up from the original's 20, and areas like the Market, once pre-rendered, are now fully polygonal 3D.

Lore & Background

The game was first hinted at E3 2010 as a tech demo, with Shigeru Miyamoto later confirming its production. Miyamoto noted the timing was important, wanting to wait until players who experienced the original in their youth were in their mid-20s, and to allow them to experience Hyrule's scenery in stereoscopic 3D. The game was co-developed with Japanese developer Grezzo, who intentionally left some original bugs untouched to preserve the experience fans remembered, fixing only those that could not be allowed to stand. Eiji Aonuma, producer of the original game, said the decision to include and adjust the Master Quest campaign was driven by a desire to make the remaster more 'formidable'.
