Wan
The first Avatar who bridged humanity and spirits through an eternal bond.
Wan is recognized as the inaugural Avatar in human history, living thousands of years prior to the modern era. He initiated the legendary cycle by forming a spiritual union with Raava, the light spirit, which granted him access to all four bending elements. His actions fundamentally altered the relationship between humanity and the spirit world. By leaving the Spirit Portals open after his final confrontation with Vaatu, Wan created a world where humans and spirits coexisted until the portals were later closed by Avatar Korra.

Lore & Background
Wan was originally a thief from a lion turtle city where humans and spirits lived separately. After being banished, he encountered the light spirit Raava and later sought her out to help defeat the dark spirit Vaatu, forming a unique connection that allowed him to master all bending arts. This union made him the first Avatar, but it is Raava's spirit that reincarnates, not Wan's individual soul. After temporarily imprisoning Vaatu until Harmonic Convergence, Wan lived among humans and worked to maintain balance. However, conflict between spirits and people persisted. He had left the Spirit Portals open after his battle with Vaatu, allowing continued interaction between the two realms until they were closed much later in history.
Reader's Guide
Wan represents the historical bridge between myth and recorded history within the Avatar universe. While early legends often spoke of spirits walking freely among men, Wan's actions marked the definitive shift toward separation. He was a human firebender before gaining access to water, earth, and air through his connection with Raava. The timeline places him thousands of years before Aang or Korra.
His decision to close the Spirit Portals created the physical barrier that defined the modern world until recent times. This act is often debated as necessary protection versus isolationism by scholars. Distinguishing legend from fact, Wan's existence is confirmed through the Avatar spirit cycle itself. Every Avatar since carries his soul, making him a living ancestor to all who follow the path. His story explains the origin of the Avatar State and the eternal struggle between light and darkness within the world.
