Fall of the Tribunal

When mortals steal godhood, the price is paid in blood and ash.

The Fall of the Tribunal represents one of the most seismic shifts in Tamrielic history, marking the end of divine rule over Morrowind. Occurring during the late Third Era, this event saw the three mortal gods—Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil—lose their divinity after the Heart of Lorkhan was destroyed by the Nerevarine. It signifies the collapse of the Tribunal Temple's power structure and the return of the Dunmer people to a state without living deities.

Lore & Background

The destruction of the Heart severed the Tribunal's connection to their divine source. Almalexia, unable to cope with her mortality and the loss of power, descended into madness before meeting a tragic end. Vivec retreated from public life, his fate becoming shrouded in mystery as he wandered the world or hid within his own constructs. Sotha Sil vanished entirely into his Clockwork City, leaving the Dunmer people leaderless and their temple faith fractured forever.

In Their Own Story

The sky above Vivec City turned a bruised purple, choking on ash that fell like snow upon the spires. A young priest stood in the Temple Plaza, watching the golden light of Almalexia's statue flicker and die. The silence was heavier than the weight of the mountain behind them; for centuries, the gods had spoken through fire and wind, but now there was only the sound of crumbling stone and the distant scream of a dying world order.

Reader's Guide

The narrative arc begins with the rise of the Nerevarine, a prophesied hero destined to confront the corruption spreading from Red Mountain. Key turning points include the discovery that Dagoth Ur is drawing power from the same source as the Tribunal Gods: the Heart of Lorkhan. As the hero progresses through Vvardenfell, they realize that defeating the Blight requires destroying the Heart, which inadvertently strips the Tribunal of their divinity. Almalexia reacts with paranoia and violence, viewing the Nerevarine as a threat to her throne. The climax sees the confrontation at Red Mountain where the artifact is shattered. This event fits into broader history by ending the Third Era's unique political landscape in Morrowind. It transitions the region from a theocracy ruled by living gods to a society grappling with post-divine reality, paving the way for the Fourth Era.
