Plot
The series was originally to follow Annie, an optimistic social worker, and Frannie, a sarcastic career bridesmaid, as they navigated dating, marriage, love, and sex alongside married friends. After retooling, it became an anthology with multiple vignettes per episode, loosely connected by themes or characters related to the three main protagonists: Annie, Judd, and Colleen.
Development and production
NBC announced Love Bites as a pilot in January 2010. Becki Newton was cast in late February, followed by Jordana Spiro. Marc Buckland was confirmed to direct the pilot in early March. NBC green-lit the series in May 2010, scheduling it for Thursday nights at 10–11 pm in fall 2010. Greg Grunberg announced via Twitter on May 17, 2010, that he would join the cast. Several changes delayed production: Spiro left after three episodes due to her role on My Boys; Krysten Ritter replaced her as Cassie in the pilot. Newton's pregnancy led to her character, a virgin, being reimagined. Showrunner Cindy Chupack reduced her role to writer for personal reasons. NBC moved the series to midseason 2010–11, replacing it with The Apprentice. Pamela Adlon was originally cast as Colleen in the unaired pilot but was replaced by Constance Zimmer in aired episodes. In July 2010, Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally became writing showrunners. On December 9, 2010, Deadline Hollywood reported the episode order was cut from 13 to 9. After cancellation, Spiro, Newton, and Grunberg pursued other pilots. The nine completed episodes premiered on June 2, 2011.
