Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City is an American drama television miniseries that premiered on Netflix on June 7, 2019. It is based on the Tales of the City novels by Armistead Maupin and features Laura Linney, Paul Gross, Olympia Dukakis, and Barbara Garrick reprising their roles from earlier television adaptations. The series won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Limited Series at the 31st GLAAD Media Awards.

Premise

Mary Ann Singleton returns to 28 Barbary Lane in San Francisco after a 23-year absence for the 90th birthday of her former landlady, Anna Madrigal. She reunites with Michael Tolliver and Anna, but faces complications with ex-husband Brian Hawkins and daughter Shawna, whom she left behind. Shawna is drawn to a new girl making a documentary about the lane. Jake Rodriguez, a transgender man, and his girlfriend Margot Park face challenges as Jake explores attraction to men. Michael considers stopping condom use with his partner Ben Marshall, who is on PrEP. Anna receives threatening letters about a secret from her past.

Production

Netflix announced development of a revival of the Tales of the City miniseries on June 28, 2017. On April 23, 2018, a production order for ten episodes was announced, with Lauren Morelli as showrunner and executive producer, leading an all-LGBTQ writer's room. Other executive producers included Maupin, Alan Poul, Laura Linney, Andrew Stearn, Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner. Michael Cunningham served as consulting producer, and Poul was expected to direct. Production companies included Working Title Television and NBCUniversal International. The release date was announced as June 7, 2019, on April 9, 2019. Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, and Barbara Garrick were confirmed to reprise their roles, with Elliot Page joining the main cast. Paul Gross reprised his role as Brian Hawkins, and Murray Bartlett, Charlie Barnett, Josiah Victoria Garcia, and May Hong joined the main cast. Recurring roles were cast for Jen Richards, Daniela Vega, Michelle Buteau, Ashley Park, Christopher Larkin, Caldwell Tidicue, Matthew Risch, Michael Park, Dickie Hearts, Benjamin Thys, Samantha Soule, Juan Castano, Zosia Mamet, Victor Garber, and later Molly Ringwald. Principal photography began by July 2018 in New York City, with interior scenes shot there and exterior scenes in San Francisco. On October 5, 2018, filming occurred in the Nodine Hill section of Yonkers, New York. Filming locations in San Francisco included the Tenderloin, the Castro, the Mission, Mission Dolores Park, Clarion Alley, Russian Hill, Macondray Lane, and North Beach. Filming at Mission Dolores Park took place on October 24, 2018, and production concluded by January 2019.
