Plot

A comet is heading straight for Earth, and a group of people are dealing with the end of the world. Jamie Winton, a bank manager from Slough, England, lives with his best friend Dave Bosley and his adoptive mother Paula. He sets out to find his wife Layla, who vanished seven years ago, and his biological mother before the comet hits. Along the way, he discovers he has a twin brother named Ariel Conroy. In New Mexico, Rhonda McNeil is in prison for taking the blame for a hacking crime her son Spike committed against the National Security Agency. There, she meets a white supremacist named Leanne. In Washington, D.C., Rhonda's brother Scotty and his husband, General Arnold Gaines, try to stop the comet. At the Vatican, Father Jude and Sister Celine search for the Antichrist and the world's savior. Eventually, most of these characters end up together in a bunker beneath Slough, watching the apocalypse unfold on television.

Cast

Mathew Baynton takes on the role of two estranged identical twins: Jamie Winton, a Slough bank manager still holding out hope that his wife Layla will come back after vanishing during their honeymoon seven years earlier, and Ariel Conroy, the cyber terrorist leader known as White Horse who heads the group Deus Ex Machina. Jamie’s best friend and housemate Dave Bosley is played by Joel Fry. Pauline Quirke portrays Paula Winton, Jamie’s adoptive mother. Rob Lowe appears as Father Jude Sutton, a Vatican priest with a foul mouth and a chain-smoking habit who has been assigned to the newly revived Devil’s Advocate office, where his job is to verify miracles and vet potential saints. Gaia Scodellaro plays Sister Celine Leonti, a young nun sent to the Vatican to work alongside Father Jude as his partner in that office. Jenna Fischer is Rhonda McNeil, a former librarian now locked up in a New Mexico maximum security prison to shield her son Spike. Kyle Soller plays Scotty McNeil, Rhonda’s twin brother and a low-level Washington bureaucrat in the Special Situations Group, who is married to Arnold Gaines. Paterson Joseph portrays Army Major General Arnold Gaines, the U.S. general leading efforts to either prevent the apocalypse or at least ensure humanity’s survival when it arrives. Megan Mullally plays Leanne Parkins, a white supremacist incarcerated alongside Rhonda, married to Todd, and mother of Junior and Jolene; she breaks out of prison with Rhonda. Diana Rigg is Sutton, the mother of Jude, Rhonda, and Scotty, grandmother of Jamie, Ariel, and Spike, and great-grandmother of Frankie. Prasanna Puwanarajah plays Rajesh McNeil, Rhonda’s husband, who is hospitalized with a terminal illness. Fabian McCallum is Spike McNeil, Rhonda’s teenage son and a hacker whose illegal breach of the NSA led to his mother’s imprisonment to protect him. Anastasia Hille plays Mary Conroy, who gave birth to twins Jamie and Ariel and abandoned Jamie as a newborn in a cardboard box at a Slough church car park. Karla Crome plays Layla, Jamie’s wife who disappeared seven years ago. Grace Taylor plays Frankie, the six-year-old daughter of Layla and Jamie, whose existence Jamie did not learn about until the sixth episode of the first series.
