Format
The show featured Paul F. Tompkins and a panel of four puppets debating issues of the day until they became too angry to continue. Later episodes sometimes included a celebrity as the fourth panelist. When returning from commercial, the show often showed footage of what happened during the break, such as a panelist talking to the camera or a heated discussion in "Crab Fire" between a Red Republican Crab and a Blue Democrat Crab. A segment called "No, You Open Up" featured Tompkins interviewing a panelist. By Season Three, the show was reworked to include different segments before the round table discussions, and during some discussions celebrity panelists would play a game with the other panelists.
Panelists
Each episode featured four different puppet characters. Among the known panelists were "A Bird," an unnamed seagull living in a Walmart parking lot, later called "Big Dumb Bird" by Tompkins; "Grunt," a cavewoman born in 4,000,000 BC who was frozen and revived in 2009 to become a Fox News Channel analyst; Andy Al-Jizah, a mummy who is President of the AAMRP (American Association of Mummified and/or Retired People); Armond Mite, a kangaroo rat film critic whose name puns on Armond White; Aunt Mildred, a sloth who chairs the "Traditional Values Coalition"; Barry, a flying squirrel and life partner of Gary who works as a marriage counselor and gay rights activist; Bierstin Krakov, a Russian vulture war correspondent and author of "A Farewell to Arms & Legs"; Bigfoot, a libertarian hermit living in Montana woods and founder of Montana's "Frozen Fan Club" branch; Billy Cabrito, a goat who is editor-in-chief of "The Daily Bleet"; and Blue Crab, the democrat co-host of "Crab Fire," revealed in "Shut Up 2013" to be married to the Red Republican Crab. Many characters were recycled from earlier Jim Henson productions such as Jim Henson's Animal Show, Puppet Up!, Telling Stories with Tomie dePaola, and Mopatop's Shop.
