Production

Development on a limited series based on the novel began at Entertainment One in August 2017. In April 2018, Kenneth Branagh was announced to star as Count Rostov with Tom Harper directing. By August 2022, Ewan McGregor had replaced Branagh in the role, and the project was set for Paramount+ internationally and Showtime in the US. Sam Miller was revealed as director and executive producer in November 2022, with Ben Vanstone as writer, executive producer, and showrunner; Nessah Muthy also contributed as a scriptwriter. Mary Elizabeth Winstead joined the cast as Anna Urbanova in February 2023, and additional cast members were added in March 2023. The series expands Anna Urbanova's role compared to the novel, giving her more agency throughout the story. McGregor collaborated with Miller and Vanstone on the count's appearance, perming and dyeing his hair dark brown, with the color fading to suggest aging. Winstead's character initially appears with bleach-blonde hair and expensive outfits, later reverting to natural brunette hair and more conservative clothing. Filming took place entirely in England, beginning in Bolton on 27 February 2023 and continuing in Liverpool, Halifax, and Leeds before being suspended in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Reception

Rotten Tomatoes reported a 91% approval rating from 35 critic reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10 and a consensus praising McGregor's performance. Metacritic assigned a score of 74 out of 100 based on 21 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews. Jack Seale of The Guardian awarded the first episode four stars, while Alison Herman of Variety praised McGregor but found the series padded and questioned its historic setting. McGregor received nominations for Best Actor in a Limited Series at the 30th Critics' Choice Awards and for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
