Production
Cooper Raiff had been writing the script for Hal & Harper for a long time, as he stated in 2020. The series was initially set up at FX, but Raiff chose to produce it independently after creative differences, with Lionsgate Television providing financing. Mark Ruffalo and Lili Reinhart were cast in August 2023, with Ruffalo playing the father and Reinhart and Raiff playing the siblings. Addison Timlin and Havana Rose Liu also joined the cast. Filming began in Los Angeles in August 2023, and an interim agreement allowed production to continue during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. In January 2024, Reinhart shared photographs from filming on her private Instagram account.
