Premise

Mr. Moseby now oversees the SS Tipton, a cruise ship owned by Mr. Tipton, after his previous posting. Zack and Cody Martin join Seven Seas High School, a study-abroad program on the ship, with reduced fees because their mother works for Mr. Tipton. London Tipton is required by her father to attend, with Moseby watching over her. A farm girl from a small town, Bailey Pickett, also signs up. The twins encounter fresh adventures and befriend new people while taking classes aboard the ship as it travels worldwide.

Cast

Cole Sprouse plays Cody Martin, the brainy, sweet-natured, and more emotional twin. He gets top grades across the board and genuinely loves learning, though athletic activities are not his strong suit. Being ten minutes younger than his brother Zack, Cody often gets pulled into Zack’s wild ideas. Zack teases him constantly, but if anyone else tries to pick on Cody, Zack immediately steps in to defend him.

For his part, Cody truly cares about Zack, no matter how much he gets picked on. By the end of the first season, Cody starts a romance with Bailey Pickett, but a mix-up in Paris leads them to break up in the second-season finale. They get back together near the end of the third season after admitting they never fell out of love. In the episode “Das Boots,” viewers learn Cody has several allergies.

A Christmas-themed episode, “A London Carol,” shows a future where Cody and Bailey are married, though it’s left unclear whether that future is real.

Dylan Sprouse portrays Zack Martin, the carefree, rule-bending, and less mature twin. After blowing through both his and Cody’s semester funds, he has to work at the ship’s juice bar, which forces Cody to take a job as a towel boy. Zack’s grades are not great, but he still manages to graduate in the series finale. He’s a natural athlete, especially good at basketball and football.

While he can be selfish, he genuinely looks out for his brother and friends, even if he doesn’t always show it. He uses cheesy pickup lines to flirt with nearly every girl on board, but rarely dates anyone for more than one episode. At the start of the third season, he falls for a new student named Maya. She initially turns him down because of his reputation as a player, but he wins her over by throwing a surprise party and then surprises everyone by being a devoted boyfriend.

Though it’s unclear at first if he truly loves her or just sees her as a challenge, later episodes prove his feelings are real. She ends things in “Graduation on Deck” after accepting a Peace Corps assignment, but they stay close friends.

Production

On February 4, 2008, Disney Channel announced development of a contemporary sequel to The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Gary Marsh, President of the Disney Channel, stated that after 88 episodes, the audience still loved the original sitcom, so a new setting aboard a luxury cruise liner was chosen. Original creator Danny Kallis was involved. In December 2008, the series was renewed for a thirteen-episode second season.

On May 11, 2009, Disney announced the second season was extended beyond the original thirteen episodes. Gary Marsh noted that with this extension, the cast became the longest running continuous characters on Disney Channel air, with 138 half-hour episodes. As of 2024, The Suite Life series holds the record (162 episodes) for longest running characters in a Disney Channel franchise produced without interruption, though the That's So Raven/Raven's Home franchise (222 episodes) and the Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World franchise (230 episodes) have since surpassed it in overall total by being relaunched years later with consistent characters.

The setting was chosen to appeal to an international audience with ports-of-call such as India, Greece, Italy, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and Thailand. An on-board theater provides an organic setup for musical numbers. Most action occurs on the SS Tipton, but the ship travels to various places around the world unfamiliar to Zack and Cody.

The series reached #1 in total viewers on all cable, outperforming Fox News and Nickelodeon by 800,000 viewers. As of August 2009, the highest rated episode was "Double-Crossed," part of the Wizards On Deck with Hannah Montana crossover trilogy, viewed by more than 10.6 million viewers, making it the program of the night across cable and broadcast television.
