Plot
The series begins when Austin hears Ally singing a song she wrote. He later speeds up the tune and performs it, not realizing it is the same one. After his friend Dez films a music video and uploads it, Austin becomes famous overnight. When Ally claims the song as hers, they create another track together. By the episode's end, Austin persuades her to be his partner, and they become close friends. Ally's friend Trish steps in as Austin's manager, while Dez keeps directing his videos. At the close of season one, Austin signs with Jimmy Starr's label.
In season two, both characters advance. Ally overcomes her fear of performing by singing a duet with Austin. By the season's end, Ally gets a record deal and makes an album with Ronnie Ramone, while Austin embarks on his first national tour. Because of her work with Ronnie, Ally misses the tour's first half but joins for the second half in the opening episodes of season three.
During season three, Ally's career grows, and she works on her debut album. Near the season's end, Austin gives up his music career when his label forbids him from being with Ally. He chooses Ally, and they admit their love for each other. Austin then joins Ally on her first tour, Trish launches her own management company, and Dez leaves for film school in Los Angeles.
In season four, the group returns after the tour and transforms Sonic Boom into a music school called A&A Music Factory, where they guide students toward their musical goals. They become business partners, and the store thrives. Later, Jimmy Starr lifts Austin's performance ban, allowing him to make an official comeback. The show has been called a smaller-scale version of HBO's comedy-drama Entourage.
Episodes
In late 2012, Disney Channel confirmed a crossover between Austin & Ally and Jessie, resulting in the hour-long special "Austin & Jessie & Ally All Star New Year," which premiered on December 7. The plot sees Austin finally realizing his dream of performing in Times Square on New Year's Eve, aided by Jessie and the Ross kids. Afterward, the group travels to Miami with Jessie and the children. There, Jessie accidentally takes lyrics Zuri wrote and tries to convince Austin to sing them. Separately, Ravi grows jealous when he thinks the family lizard, Mrs. Kipling, might have a crush on Dez, but it turns out she actually dislikes him.
Cast and characters
Ross Lynch stars as Austin Moon, a charismatic and self-assured singer who skyrockets to fame after performing a song he happened to hear Ally singing. Ally tracks him down to call him out for stealing her work, but instead of staying enemies, they become friends and form a creative duo. Their arrangement is simple at first: Austin performs, and Ally writes the songs. Ally is a gifted songwriter but too nervous to sing in public, while Austin loves being on stage but can't write his own material.
Their opposite personalities cause friction early on, but as their bond deepens, they discover they have more in common than they expected. This leads to a romantic relationship that starts and stops throughout the second season. By the third season, they are dating again, and their relationship remains steady and healthy through the fourth season. Austin's closest friend is Dez, who handles the directing and filming of his music videos, and his manager is Trish.
In the fourth season, Austin teaches music and performance skills to students at the A&A Music Factory. The series finale reveals that Austin and Ally are married and have two children, Alex and Ava.
Laura Marano plays Ally Dawson, a clever young woman who writes songs but struggles with intense stage fright and a reserved nature. She grew up loving music in her father's store, Sonic Boom, where she learned to write songs for herself. After Austin accidentally posts one of her songs online and becomes an internet hit, Ally and her best friend Trish find him to confront him. Instead, she agrees to become his songwriter and musical partner.
Their partnership is based on the idea that she writes and he performs. Ally is a brilliant lyricist but too shy to sing her own work, while Austin thrives on performing but cannot compose songs. Their clashing personalities create early conflicts, though they gradually realize how alike they truly are, leading to an on-and-off romance that begins in season two. They reunite in season three and maintain a secure, loving relationship throughout season four.
Ally works at Sonic Boom until she overcomes her stage fright and launches her own career, at which point the store transforms into the A&A Music Factory. In the fourth season, she also gives music lessons and teaches performance techniques to students there.
