Production
The Hills: New Beginnings was announced on August 20, 2018, at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, with a planned 2019 premiere. The premiere date was later set for June 24, 2019. Due to high viewership and ratings, a second season was ordered on July 22, 2019, and premiered on May 12, 2021. Production on season two began in early 2020, but only a few episodes were completed before filming halted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. MTV considered resuming production in a quarantine bubble but ultimately chose against it. Normal production resumed in November 2020 under strict COVID-19 safety protocols after California began lifting lockdowns. The long delay contributed to low ratings for the second season, and MTV canceled the series on January 18, 2022.
