Biography

McCoy was born in Chicago, Illinois, to David Ray McCoy, a businessman, and Katie McCoy, a former professional model. Her paternal half-sisters include Jelahn McCoy, Cynthia McCoy Scott, and Da Brat. She attended St. James College Prep, Kenwood Academy, and Thornridge High School, graduating in 1986, then studied at Eastern Illinois University before pursuing acting. Her debut was the lead role in the independent film Reasons, directed by Monty Ross. She is best known for playing Diamond in The Players Club, written and directed by Ice Cube, and also appeared in The Wood, Rhapsody, All About You, and Go for Broke. From 2003 to 2007, she starred as Neesee James on the UPN/The CW sitcom All of Us. Before acting, she modeled and performed shows in Chicago churches and high schools. She appeared in numerous music videos, including those for Lil' Kim, Ginuwine, Ludacris, Sisqó, Tupac Shakur, and Jamie Foxx, and recorded the single 'Would You?' with Benzino. In 2005, she launched two fashion lines: Luxe & Romance lingerie and Xraye jeans. In 2011, she introduced 'The LisaRaye Collection' with PZI Jeans and a hair line called LisaRaye Glamour; that year she also served as Ambassador/Grand Marshal for the 70th Magic City Classic.

Personal life

McCoy has a daughter, Kai Morae Pace, born December 5, 1989, with Kenji Pace. She married American football player Tony Martin in 1992 and divorced in 1994. In April 2006, she married Michael Misick, then Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, in a ceremony with 300 guests followed by a three-week honeymoon. During the marriage, she held the title First Lady of the Turks and Caicos. In August 2008, Misick announced their divorce; he resigned in March 2009 amid a corruption investigation, fled, and was later arrested in Brazil and extradited. McCoy is a convert to Christianity. She has inaccurately referred to herself as the 'Queen Mother' of Ghana, including on The Wendy Williams Show in 2019, drawing mockery on Ghanaian social media; journalist Nana Aba Anamoah accused her of ignorance, noting Ghana is a republic. McCoy was allegedly crowned 'queen mother' at a Los Angeles nightclub in September 2019 by Yahweh ben Yahweh ben Yahweh, who had purchased the title of nkosuohene from a chief in Kwanyako, Ghana. She visited Kwanyako in July 2021, promising to finance a vocational centre for women and a local performance troupe.
