Production
Netflix picked up the series in June 2017. Tony Danza plays Tony Caruso Sr., a former NYPD officer kicked off the force and arrested for constantly breaking department rules. Josh Groban plays his son, Tony Jr., a detective who strictly follows every procedure. The show was created by Andy Breckman, the mind behind the Emmy-winning series Monk. The father and son live together, and in the first episode, Tony Jr.'s coworkers call him "Choirboy" and "Nancy Drew" behind his back. Danza, a New Yorker who sits on the board of the city's Police Athletic League, planned to use his real ties to the NYPD to shape his character. The first season was shot in several Brooklyn neighborhoods. Breckman said he wanted a playful, family-friendly show focused on classic puzzle-solving, unlike darker cop dramas. Pat Irwin composed the music.
