Background and release

In March 2021, plans for an animated series were set in motion, with Chris Rock back as narrator. Four months later, Sanjay Shah, who had worked as an executive producer and co-showrunner on Central Park, came on board to write and produce. Shah had originally said no to the project, but changed his mind once he found out it would be animated, a medium he felt opened up fresh comedic possibilities. He explained that he wouldn't have pursued a live-action reboot, and that the animation angle was what drew him in. To bring in a range of viewpoints, Shah brought back writers from the original show and also hired new ones. In August 2022, the revival was given the title Everybody Still Hates Chris, picking up right where the original series finale ended. Casting was announced in June 2024: Rock, Terry Crews, and Tichina Arnold would reprise their roles, while Tim Johnson Jr., Ozioma Akagha, Terrence Little Gardenhigh, and Gunnar Sizemore took over the younger parts of Chris, Tonya, Drew, and Greg, since the original child actors had aged out. Many other original cast members also returned as voice actors, including Jackée Harry, Tisha Campbell, Ernest Lee Thomas, Antonio Fargas, Kevontay Jackson, Jacqueline Mazzarella, Jeris Lee Poindexter, Paul Ben-Victor, Mike Estime, Earthquake, and Loretta Devine. Rock and Shah insisted on having Crews and Arnold involved before moving forward, and both actors came on as producers as well. They were eager to return, believing the original show still had more stories to tell. Crews was at first unsure about the animated version, worried about how his character would be drawn, but he ended up happy with the final design. The series was ordered for 20 episodes, premiered on Comedy Central on September 25, 2024, and the first 10 episodes dropped on Paramount+ on May 7, 2025.
