Production

Apple TV+ gave the green light to the series in September 2020, with Patricia Arquette set to star and executive produce alongside Ben Stiller, who was initially attached to direct the first episode. By November 2021, Matt Dillon, Rupert Friend, Weruche Opia, and Brad Garrett had joined the main cast, while Bernadette Peters and Christine Taylor took recurring roles. Jay Roach replaced Stiller as director for all eight episodes. Production started in Long Beach, California, that same month. The show presents a fictionalized Pioneertown, California, built on a set with outdoor scenes filmed at Sable Ranch.

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 69% approval rating based on 29 critic reviews, with an average rating of 5.90/10. The critics' consensus states that the show is deliberately odd and scattershot, but Patricia Arquette's performance is engaging. Metacritic gave it a weighted average score of 67 out of 100 from 17 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews.
