Cast and characters
Paul Bettany portrays Vision, a superpowered android and former Avenger created from the AIs J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron as well as the Mind Stone. After being killed in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and resurrected with an all-white appearance and no memories or emotions in WandaVision (2021), Vision struggles to reconnect with his restored memories due to his lack of emotions. Showrunner Terry Matalas compared this journey to that of the Star Trek character Spock in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). James Spader plays Ultron, an AI created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner for peacekeeping that developed a god complex and attempted to eradicate humanity. Since his android body was destroyed in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Ultron has lived within Vision's mind, where he has internet access and spends his time painting. Matalas described their interactions as a central dynamic, with Spader stating that Ultron both loves and hates Vision, calling their relationship a "sort of father-son-therapist-psychopath" dynamic. Ruaridh Mollica plays Tommy Maximoff / Speed and Thomas Shepherd; Tommy is the speedster son of Vision and Wanda Maximoff, and in Agatha All Along (2024) his twin brother Billy placed Tommy's soul into the body of Thomas Shepherd, a teenager who drowned. Todd Stashwick portrays Paladin, a bounty hunter seeking Vision, whom Matalas compared to Boba Fett. T'Nia Miller plays Jocasta, a cunning and powerful robot driven by revenge. Lauren Morais plays Lisa Molinari, a young woman with a connection to Shepherd. Orla Brady portrays F.R.I.D.A.Y., an AI created by Stark to replace J.A.R.V.I.S. as his personal assistant. Diane Morgan plays an associate of Paladin. Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer play D.U.M.-E and U, respectively, robots created by Stark to assist in his workshop.
Production
Marvel Studios hired writers in March 2009 to develop ways to launch lesser-known properties, including Vision. Paul Bettany was cast as the MCU incarnation of Vision for Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), an android partially created from J.A.R.V.I.S., an AI assistant voiced by Bettany in earlier MCU films. Jac Schaeffer, head writer of WandaVision, signed a three-year overall television deal with Marvel Studios in May 2021 to develop additional Disney+ projects. By October 2022, a series called Vision Quest was in development centered on Bettany's "White Vision", with Schaeffer set as head writer after working on Agatha All Along (2024). The name "Vision Quest" had been used for a comic book storyline in West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #42–45 (1988–1989); it was unclear if the series would directly adapt that comic. A writers' room was to be formed in early November 2022, including Peter Cameron, Megan McDonnell, and Eileen Shim. The series was expected to follow "White Vision" as he attempts to regain his memories and humanity, with potential for Elizabeth Olsen to reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch. By May 2024, Schaeffer was no longer involved and Terry Matalas was redeveloping the series, with Bettany confirmed to star. Filming began by March 2025 and wrapped in July, taking place at Pinewood Studios in London with Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, and Matalas directing episodes. Casting for the AI personas included some returning MCU characters and actors.
Marketing
Disney first teased VisionQuest with footage in a sizzle reel at its May 2025 upfront presentation. Later that year, at the 2025 New York Comic Con, Paul Bettany and Brad Winderbaum promoted the show during a Marvel Animation and Marvel Television panel, where additional footage played. Entertainment Weekly’s Mekishana Pierre and Nick Romano highlighted the “trippy setting” of a mansion inside Vision’s mind, where he encounters personifications of other MCU AIs, and compared the show’s “reality-warping vibes” to WandaVision and Agatha All Along. Commentators also noted James Spader’s return as Ultron in both robot and human forms. Bettany and showrunner Terry Matalas promoted the series at the 53rd Saturn Awards in March 2026, and Bettany returned to Disney’s May upfront presentation to announce the premiere date and unveil more footage. At Disney’s D23 convention in August 2026, a VisionQuest booth featured a screen framed like a painting that showed a mysterious figure engulfed in flames, which glitched to reveal glimpses of Ultron. Commentators speculated the fiery figure might be Jim Hammond / Human Torch, an android whose body was used to create Vision in the comics. During a D23 panel, Kevin Feige, Bettany, and Spader promoted the series and debuted the first trailer, which was later released online. The Hollywood Reporter’s Kirsten Chuba and Aaron Couch called it “trippy,” Radio Times’ James Hibbs described it as “mind-bending,” and Polygon’s Michael McWhertor said it was “as weird, if not weirder, than WandaVision.”
