Production
The series was created by Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez at Warner Bros. Television, receiving a 10-episode series order for Peacock. Hernandez served as showrunner while both co-wrote and executive produced. Susan Rovner, who had been developing the series at Warner Bros., out-bid other broadcasters and streamers to acquire the show for Peacock after becoming chair of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. Owen Harris and Alethea Jones executive produced and each directed multiple episodes. Casting began in March 2022 with Betty Gilpin as the lead nun and Jake McDorman opposite her. Margo Martindale, Andy McQueen, and Ben Chaplin joined the main cast, while David Arquette and Elizabeth Marvel took recurring roles. Chris Diamantopoulos, Ashley Romans, and Katja Herbers were added after filming started. Production took place primarily on the Warner Bros. lot and at a remote desert location for secrecy. International scenes were filmed in Spain at locations including Sa Boadella beach, the Cathedral in Girona, Figueres Fortress, Valencia, and Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona. Writers used AI to generate episode titles, and Teller served as magic consultant. No second season was planned as of May 2023.
