Premise

In 2033, humans can upload themselves into a virtual afterlife. After computer programmer Nathan Brown dies prematurely, he is uploaded to the expensive Lakeview, where he contends with his possessive still-living girlfriend Ingrid. He bonds with his living customer service rep Nora, who struggles with her job, her dying father who refuses upload, and growing feelings for Nathan while suspecting Nathan was murdered.

Production

Amazon announced a pilot order for the single-camera comedy series created by Greg Daniels on September 8, 2017, and on July 28, 2018, ordered a first season of ten episodes. Daniels and Howard Klein executive produce; 3 Arts Entertainment produces. The first season premiered on May 1, 2020. Amazon renewed the series for a second season on May 8, 2020, which premiered on March 11, 2022; for a third season on May 11, 2022, which premiered on October 20, 2023; and for a fourth and final season on March 6, 2024, which premiered on August 25, 2025. Robbie Amell and Andy Allo were announced as the pilot's male and female leads in January 2018. Paulo Costanzo and Mackenzie Cardwell were cast in recurring roles during second-season filming in February–March 2021. Josh Banday, a first-season recurring actor, was promoted to series regular for the second season. Principal photography for the first season took place from March 5 to May 10, 2019, in Vancouver, Canada. Exterior shots for Lakeview were filmed at Mohonk Mountain House and Preserve in New Paltz, New York, with some interior shots also done on location. The second season was filmed from January 25 to April 15, 2021; the third from August 15 to November 2, 2022; and the fourth from late August to early October 2024.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an 88% approval rating with an average score of 6.9/10 from 56 critics, and a critical consensus calling it an afterlife worth living despite tonal overload. The second season has a 100% approval rating with an average score of 7.3/10 from 15 critics, whose consensus notes the truncated installment still makes terrific comedy. The third season has an 88% approval rating with an average score of 7.3/10 from 18 critics, with a consensus that the techno satire gains human dimension. On Metacritic, the first season scored 67/100 (22 critics), the second 72/100 (4 critics), and the third 65/100 (6 critics), all indicating generally favorable reviews.
