Plot
During a standard medical checkup, the Doctor finds signs that Ensign Harry Kim underwent intricate brain surgery within the past two years—surgery only the Doctor could have done. The Doctor has no memory of this procedure and starts investigating the lost time, discovering that some of his memory files have been erased. Reconstructing the data reveals photographs of an Ensign Ahni Jetal, a woman he does not recall. The Doctor eventually learns that Captain Janeway and the crew deliberately removed files related to a traumatic incident that triggered a holographic version of a psychotic break. After an away mission attack, the Doctor could save only one of two equally critical patients: Ensign Jetal and Ensign Harry Kim. He chose to save Harry, and Jetal died on the operating table. Over time, the Doctor became overwhelmed by guilt, believing his friendship with Harry influenced his decision. This created a conflict within his ethical programming, compromising his impartiality. When the deleted files are restored, the Doctor's mental stability again deteriorates. Janeway must choose between wiping his memories again or letting him work through his guilt, a choice that could leave the crew without a medic. Seven of Nine argues that, like herself, the Doctor has grown enough to deserve a chance to evolve beyond his original programming. Janeway decides to let the Doctor keep his memories so he can eventually come to terms with his past. In the final scene, the Doctor reads from La Vita Nuova. The lines are altered from the actual poem to fit the story and provide a deeper sense of closure: "In that book, which is my memory, on the first page of the chapter that is the day when I first met you appear the words, 'here begins a new life'."
