Making and release

Gibson and Maddox approached the production company with an offer to write an episode after discussing various collaborations.[2] The story was developed by Gibson, Maddox, and series creator Chris Carter during consecutive weekends at Carter's West End apartment.[3] The episode was viewed by 18.04 million viewers and earned a Nielsen rating of 11.1 with a 16 share.[1] Because series creator Chris Carter and executive producer Frank Spotnitz had other commitments, more than twelve months passed before the episode's rewrite and completion occurred.[4]

Revisions made by Carter and Spotnitz included increasing the "attitude" displayed by the character Esther.[4] During the show's original Vancouver production period, "Kill Switch" held the record for highest cost per episode, with filming spanning 22 days.[5] The Westham Island Bridge, which crosses Canoe Pass in British Columbia, served as the location for the bridge scenes.[5] Mulder's discovery of an abandoned house was filmed at a site called "Read House," a locally known historical landmark.[6]

What the cited sources add

Strachan noted that Gibson was on set a lot during filming "but only because my daughter insisted on being there."[3] VanDerWerff highlighted the moment when a virtual Scully performs a roundhouse kick on nurses as being among the episode's finest shots.[7]
