**Gameplay**
Subnautica is a first-person survival action-adventure game set in an open world. You control Ryley Robinson, one of the few survivors of the crashed spaceship *The Aurora*, stranded on the ocean planet 4546B.
The main goal is to explore the alien ocean, survive its hazards, and complete tasks that move the story forward. You can collect resources and blueprints, build tools, construct bases and submersibles, and interact with the local wildlife.
Most of the game takes place underwater, with two islands to explore. A day-and-night cycle affects visibility, and an eclipse occurs frequently.
- **Survival mode:** You manage health, hunger, thirst, and oxygen. Dying makes you respawn, but you lose certain items from your inventory. - **Freedom mode:** Nearly identical to survival, but without hunger and thirst. - **Hardcore mode:** Permanent death. If you die, you don't respawn, and the save file is deleted. You also don't get low-oxygen warnings. - **Creative mode:** All depleting stats are removed. All blueprints are unlocked, so you can craft without resources. You start with a stasis rifle, a Seaglide, a mobile vehicle bay, and a propulsion cannon. Items, bases, and vehicles don't need power, and vehicles are immune to crush depth.

Lore & Background
Roughly 1,000 years prior to the game's events, an alien race known as 'the Architects' began investigation of the ocean planet 4546B for a cure to the Kharaa bacterium, which had devastated their civilization. They discovered that the Sea Emperor Leviathan species naturally produces 'Enzyme 42' in its digestive tract, making the species immune to the bacterium. Attempts to extract the enzyme from related species led to a containment breach, releasing the bacterium into the ocean and forcing the Architects to place 4546B under quarantine. Centuries later, the spaceship Degasi crashed on 4546B while scanning for minerals, and three crew members survived for a few months. Ten years after that, the Alterra Corporation's spaceship Aurora crash-landed while attempting to locate the Degasi wreck. The player character, Ryley Robinson, Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief, ejected in an escape pod and found himself the sole survivor. He was contacted by the trading ship Sunbeam, which was shot down by the Architects' Quarantine Enforcement Platform when attempting rescue. Ryley discovered he was infected with Kharaa and could not disable the weapon. Venturing deeper, he found the last living Sea Emperor Leviathan, who communicated telepathically. Ryley helped hatch her eggs, releasing Enzyme 42 that cured him and halted the bacterium's spread. Cured, he disabled the platform, constructed an escape rocket, and left the planet.
Reader's Guide
Subnautica was announced on December 17, 2013, with Charlie Cleveland as director and lead gameplay programmer. The team was inspired by Minecraft and motivated by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting to create a non-violent game without lethal guns. The game uses the Unity engine rather than the Spark engine used for Natural Selection 2. Early access versions were released on Steam Early Access in December 2014 and on Xbox One Preview in May 2016. Initially, the game lacked hunger and thirst mechanics, but after criticism, the team added them. The game received generally positive reviews from critics and sold over 5 million copies by January 2020. A spin-off, Subnautica: Below Zero, originally meant as downloadable content, was released in May 2021. A direct sequel, Subnautica 2, was released on May 14, 2026 in early access.
