DayZ
A multiplayer survival game set in a plague-ridden open world.
DayZ is a multiplayer online survival game from Bohemia Interactive, built as a standalone version of the popular mod originally created for Arma 2. After spending five years in early access on Windows, it launched fully in December 2018, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions following in 2019.
Players find themselves in fictional countries where a mysterious plague has turned most people into violent "infected." The goal is simple: stay alive by scavenging for food, water, weapons, and medicine. You can fight or avoid the infected, and you can choose to cooperate with or kill other players.
Development started in 2012 when mod creator Dean Hall joined Bohemia Interactive to work on the standalone game. The team focused on overhauling the engine, building a solid client-server architecture, and adding new features like diseases and an improved inventory system. During early access alone, the game sold over four million copies.
**Gameplay**
The core objective is to survive the zombie outbreak. You start in a random spot on the map with only basic clothes, a glow stick, a bandage, and a piece of fruit. Exploring houses, barns, and apartments is essential to find food and water, which keep you alive.
Clothing offers customization, extra storage, protection, and warmth. Weapons range from melee tools to firearms, with attachments like suppressors and scopes. Dynamic events—such as train wrecks, police scenes, military convoys, and helicopter crashes—spawn rare gear not found elsewhere. Random gas attacks can hit parts of Chernarus and Livonia, causing a disease that leads to vomiting blood and coughing up blood, eventually causing unconsciousness and death unless you leave the zone and get medical help. These gas clouds last 20 to 40 minutes. A full NBC suit and gas mask can protect you. Two permanent contamination zones on each map also hold exclusive equipment.
Player interaction is central. You can use proximity voice chat, text chat, and gestures like waving, pointing, or raising your hands to surrender.
Medical supplies are scattered around, as the environment poses many threats. Illnesses include the common cold, cholera, kuru, and salmonellosis. All except kuru can be cured. Injuries can damage items you carry. Bleeding must be bandaged quickly to prevent blood loss, which can blur your vision and knock you out.

Lore & Background
DayZ began development in 2012 when the mod's creator, Dean Hall, joined Bohemia Interactive to commence work on the standalone version of the game. The development has been focused on altering the engine to suit the game's needs, developing a working client–server architecture, and introducing new features like diseases and a better inventory system. The game sold over four million copies during its early access phase. The game is based on a client–server architecture, where functions such as item and NPC spawning are decided on the server, rather than on the player's machine, a change from the DayZ mod in Arma 2 that aimed to reduce hacks and exploits.
Reader's Guide
DayZ's significance lies in its evolution from a popular mod for Arma 2 into a standalone title that defined the survival genre for a generation. The game's development, led by Dean Hall, focused on rebuilding the engine to support a more robust client–server architecture, reducing exploits and enabling new features such as diseases, a better inventory system, and dynamic events like gas attacks and helicopter crashes. Player interaction is a core element, with proximity voice chat, text chat, and gestures enabling cooperation or conflict. The game's early access period, which lasted five years and sold over four million copies, allowed the community to shape its direction through feedback and modding. Community-run servers and mods have extended the game's lifespan, adding items, vehicles, and entirely new gameplay modes. DayZ's legacy is that of a foundational survival game that emphasized emergent storytelling through player-driven encounters and a harsh, unforgiving world.
