Background
When an old vampire hunter is killed by a group of vampires before he can fire an old Colt pistol, the vampire Kate gives the gun to her mate Luther, the nest's leader. Dean recognizes the hunter's name in the newspaper, and in Manning, Colorado, he and Sam find a letter addressed to their father, John, who returns: the Colt is mystical and can kill anything, including Azazel, the demon who killed their mother.
The Winchesters capture Kate to trade her for the gun. Luther attacks John during the trade, the brothers intervene, and John shoots Luther dead with the Colt. John accepts that the Winchesters are stronger as a family and invites Sam and Dean to hunt Azazel with him.
