Background

Sam and Dean Winchester track down Azazel, the demon responsible for the deaths of their mother Mary and father John, and try to discover what he plans for Sam and the other psychic children, young adults whom Azazel visited as infants and gave abilities.

The writers used the season to expand the idea of hunters, introducing many recurring characters through Harvelle's Roadhouse, a saloon frequented by hunters. Samantha Ferris plays its owner Ellen Harvelle, an old friend of John Winchester, and Alona Tal plays her daughter Jo, while Jim Beaver recurs as Bobby Singer.

It was the first season to air on The CW, a joint venture of The WB and UPN, on Thursdays at 9:00 pm. The season averaged only about 3.14 million American viewers and was in danger of not being renewed.

Reviews were mostly positive, with praise for the brotherly chemistry between the two leads, though the formulaic structure of the episodes was criticized. Warner Home Video released it on DVD as a six-disc box set on September 11, 2007.
