Background
The story follows Sam and Dean Winchester on the road as they look for their father John, who is chasing the demon that killed their mother and Sam's girlfriend. Along the way they rely on his journal to keep up the family business of saving people and hunting supernatural creatures. Jared Padalecki plays Sam and Jensen Ackles plays Dean, while Jeffrey Dean Morgan appears as John and Nicki Aycox as the demon Meg Masters.
Kripke described the mythology of the year as just "find Dad". The opening ten episodes are self-enclosed stories, so the larger mythology only starts with episode eleven, "Scarecrow".
This is the only season to air on The WB, with all later seasons airing on The CW. After sixteen episodes on Tuesdays the show shifted to Thursdays, and the season drew an average of about 3.81 million American viewers. The pilot episode brought it two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Critics were split: some disliked the mostly anthology-like format, while others praised the emotional moments and the brotherly chemistry between the lead actors. A six-disc DVD box set from Warner Home Video followed on September 5, 2006.
