Development
Marvel Snap marks the first release from Second Dinner, a studio whose founders previously worked on Hearthstone. The team described their design method as a "grocery cart" approach, borrowing elements from Clash Royale, Backgammon, and Paul Peterson's Smash Up. They aimed for strategic depth without complex rules; the Snap! mechanic, which doubles the stakes, became a key tool for bluffing and counter-bluffing. A full story was initially planned but scrapped when no compelling narrative emerged, as the developers felt a bad story would only disrupt gameplay. The game's promotional trailer shows Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, who returns to S.H.I.E.L.D. only to learn he has been informally replaced by a teenage girl.
Reception
According to Metacritic, Marvel Snap received generally favorable reviews. GamesRadar+ noted the game is angled toward a generation of players too distracted for an overly complicated metagame, praising its approachability and replay value. The Guardian praised its approachable nature combined with complexity from the variety of locations and cards, and commended its microtransactions as not necessary for a positive experience. By 2023, Fortune reported Marvel Snap had become the top rated digital collectible card game, beating Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game and Magic: The Gathering Online. By 2024, it had 22 million downloads and over $200 million in revenue.
