Development
A Marvel Comics MOBA was reportedly in development at Smilegate by late 2012, following a deal with Disney Interactive, with a rumored 2014 launch aimed at Asian audiences. Years later, on May 28, 2019, NetEase Games and Marvel Entertainment revealed Marvel Super War as the first Marvel MOBA for Android and iOS, initiating a closed beta in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. A second beta, adding Singapore, began on November 21, 2019. The game launched on December 19, 2019, in those countries plus Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and expanded to Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand on August 27, 2020. Its servers shut down on June 18, 2024.
Reception
Dale Bashir of IGN Southeast Asia, who played the game at the Thailand Game Show 2019, described it as a great way to learn MOBA basics with Marvel superheroes, finding it more accessible than Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and League of Legends: Wild Rift due to easier kill earning. Josh Ye of South China Morning Post praised the graphics and character designs, noting that roles and powers connected to comic counterparts made gameplay immersive; while calling it another reskin of a typical MOBA, he commended NetEase for applying the MOBA formula to the Marvel Universe. In September 2020, Marvel Super War was added to Chinese-made apps banned in India, with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stating the apps were engaged in activities prejudicial to India's sovereignty, integrity, defence, security, and public order.
