The story takes place a year after the events of Matchless Raijin-Oh, in Aozora City, a neighboring town to Hinobori City. Peace had returned after God Raijin-Oh defeated the Evil Empire, but a bomb accidentally releases Gokuark, a great demon king of the Demon World that Eldran had been containing. Eldran manages to contain him, but one of his servants escapes and attempts to free his master. Eldran grants three new successor mechas—Go Tiger, King Elephant, and Mach Eagle—to Kotaro Kirigakure and his two friends Yosuke Kazamatsuri and Rikiya Ryuzaki, along with pilot suits that grant each a superpower. However, a dark wizard named Yaminorius III curses them so that each can turn into a dog if their identity is known to others. Later, auxiliary mechas Revolger and Gekiryuger appear and combine with the main robots to form Ganbaruger; Great Ganbaruger is a separate combined form.

The Curse of Identity & the Ninja Mandate

The central dramatic engine of Ganbaruger is a curse laid upon the three new Eldran pilots. When Eldran bestows the successor mechas—Go Tiger, King Elephant, and Mach Eagle—along with pilot suits that grant each boy a unique superpower, a dark condition is attached: if their true identities are ever revealed to others, the curse transforms them into dogs. The architect of this threat is Yaminorius III, a dark wizard whose escaped servant was freed alongside the demon king Gokuark when a bomb accidentally released him from Eldran's containment. The Miracle Ninja Ganbar Team, led by Kotaro, must therefore battle the Devil Beasts of the Demon World while keeping their faces hidden from the townspeople of Aozora City. This secrecy obligation persists until the debut of Nekketsu Saikyō Go-Saurer a year later. Meanwhile, Kotaro's father Toubei is himself turned into a dog named Gonzales early on, a form he retains for most of the run until the final confrontation. The Earth Defense Class simultaneously battles Gokudo and Jaku Lucifer from the fifth dimension.

The Ganbar Team: Three Boys, Three Powers

Kotaro Kirigakure, a fourth-grader at Aozora Elementary and son of a kindergarten principal who is also a ninja master, pilots Go Tiger as Yellow Ganbar with super-speed. His ride-on vehicle is the tiger-themed Ganbar Bike, and he serves as the primary pilot of both Ganbaruger and the ultimate Great Ganbaruger. Yet Kotaro is defined as much by his mischievousness as his heroism—he is a self-described juvenile delinquent whose constant pranks earn him the enmity of nearly every resident of Aozora. Yousuke Kazamatsuri, the group's shy and curious intellectual, becomes Blue Ganbar with super-senses, flies a prop-driven plane called the Ganbare Jet, and pilots Mach Eagle before later taking the Gekiryuger. Rikiya Ryuzaki, a dutiful older brother and aspiring professional baseball player whose father owns a ramen restaurant, is Red Ganbar with super-strength, rides the red go-cart Ganbar Buggy, and commands King Elephant, later adding Revolger to his arsenal.

Ganbaruger marked a significant expansion of the Eldran mechanical template.
