Roughly 1,000 years prior to the game's events, the Architects began investigating planet 4546B for a cure to the Kharaa bacterium. After a Sea Dragon Leviathan attacked a research facility, causing it to collapse and release the Kharaa bacterium into the ocean, the Architects placed 4546B under quarantine. The Quarantine Enforcement Platform was their method of enforcing this quarantine, shooting down any ship it detected attempting to enter or exit the planet's atmosphere. The platform remained active for centuries. When the trading ship Sunbeam responded to the Aurora's SOS and attempted to rescue Ryley Robinson, the platform shot it down. The player character, Ryley Robinson, later investigates and discovers that the weapon responsible is the Architects' Quarantine Enforcement Platform.

In Their Own Story

After the Sunbeam is shot down, Ryley Robinson investigates and discovers the Quarantine Enforcement Platform. He attempts to disable the weapon, but the control panel detects he is infected with Kharaa and denies his input. Later, after Ryley uses an enzyme to hatch the Sea Emperor Leviathan's eggs, the young release Enzyme 42 into the environment, curing Ryley and halting the bacterium's spread. A cured Ryley can then disable the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, construct an escape rocket based on blueprints recovered from the Aurora wreck, and leave the planet.
