When Henry's true nature was revealed, he slaughtered the lab staff and attempted to kill Eleven. In a final confrontation within the laboratory's containment chamber, Eleven overpowered him, tearing open a gate to the Upside Down and banishing him into that dimension. Stripped of his human form by the toxic environment, Henry's body mutated into a grotesque, vine-covered entity. Over the next few decades, he absorbed the particles of the Mind Flayer, shaping them into a massive spider-like form before eventually returning to Hawkins as the terrifying Vecna.

Reader's Guide

Decades later, Henry has fully adapted to the hostile dimension, merging with its biological particles to become the Mind Flayer's commander. He manipulates events from the shadows, eventually regaining a physical form as Vecna. His return in the modern timeline involves targeting traumatized teenagers in Hawkins, killing them in ritualistic fashion to reopen gates and merge the dimensions permanently. This culminates in a massive battle where the combined efforts of Eleven, her friends, and the residents of Hawkins attempt to stop his final assault on reality.
