Unlike previous victims who were found dead with their bodies twisted into grotesque shapes, Max survived the initial psychic assault only to be left clinically dead for several minutes before being resuscitated. Her survival came at a terrible cost; she remained unresponsive in a hospital bed, hooked up to life support systems that kept her heart beating while her mind was seemingly absent from reality. Unbeknownst to the medical staff, Max's consciousness had not departed but rather been dragged into Vecna's realm. There, she existed as a disembodied spirit, forced to relive her deepest traumas and fears in an endless loop of psychological torture designed by Vecna to break her will completely. Her friends realized that while her body lay still in Hawkins, her soul was fighting for survival in a dark, ash-covered version of their town, making her rescue a race against time before the entity could fully consume her identity. The situation highlighted the unique nature of the connection between the human mind and the Upside Down. Max became a living bridge between worlds, proving that death was not always absolute in this supernatural conflict. Her struggle underscored the theme of resilience, as she managed to hold onto fragments of her memories and love for her friends, using them as anchors to prevent total assimilation into the darkness.

In Their Own Story

The air in the hospital room was sterile and cold, smelling faintly of antiseptic and old flowers. Max lay motionless, her chest rising and falling only because a machine forced it to do so. To anyone watching from outside the glass, she looked like a doll with its strings cut. But inside, the world was burning. The sky above was a bruised purple, choked by red ash that fell like snow. She ran through the halls of Hawkins High, but the lockers were rusted and bleeding black slime. Every door she opened led to a memory she wished she could forget: the sound of her brother's laughter turning into a scream, the feeling of falling from a great height, the crushing weight of guilt. Reader's Guide

The arc begins in late October 1986 when Max becomes the fourth victim of Vecna's curse following a session with Eleven at Hawkins High. After being found alive but critically injured by Lucas Sinclair in the woods near the school, she was rushed to Hawkins Hospital where she entered a prolonged coma. For months, her condition remained static until Eleven and her friends attempted to enter her mind to break Vecna's hold, culminating in a rescue attempt during the battle at Starcourt Mall.
