The season begins with a tragedy that fractures the Byers family, sparking an investigation by local law enforcement and a group of young friends armed with Dungeons & Dragons knowledge. Simultaneously, a secret laboratory operates beneath the surface, hiding a child known only as Eleven who possesses dangerous powers linked to the supernatural breach opening in the woods. As the barrier between worlds thins, monsters begin to hunt, forcing ordinary citizens to confront an extraordinary evil.

The narrative weaves together domestic horror with government conspiracy. Joyce Byers fights for her son through sheer maternal instinct, while Sheriff Jim Hopper uncovers a web of lies surrounding his town's history. The children must navigate the dangers of adolescence alongside literal monsters from another dimension, culminating in a desperate battle to seal the gateway before more are lost forever.

The season opens when Will vanishes after biking home at dusk, leaving his mother desperate while his friends search the woods. They discover a girl with no memory wandering alone, who claims to be running from men in suits. Meanwhile, Sheriff Hopper investigates the disappearance and finds clues pointing toward Hawkins National Laboratory. As the group bonds with the mysterious girl, they realize she is connected to Will's plight through a supernatural gateway.

Nancy and Jonathan uncover a creature stalking the town, while Joyce communicates with her son using Christmas lights. Tension rises as the government attempts to recapture the girl before the truth comes out. The climax sees the friends luring the monster into the school gymnasium for a final confrontation. With the help of the lab's staff and Eleven’s powers, they defeat the creature and close the rift between worlds.

However, the victory is bittersweet as the season ends with lingering questions about the laboratory's future plans and the safety of their small community.
