Transporter

A transporter is a teleportation machine in Star Trek. It converts a person or object into an energy pattern (dematerialisation), beams it to a target and turns it back into matter (rematerialisation). The usual command to start it is "Energize".

Background
It was introduced in the original series in 1966, following teleportation devices in earlier science fiction such as the 1939 serial Buck Rogers.
The transporter was conceived so that characters could get from the ship to a planet without costly, slow special effects of a craft landing. Transporter malfunctions also became a common plot device.
