Emergency Medical Hologram
Starfleet's holographic emergency doctor.
The Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) is a holographic program that treats patients in emergencies or when the regular medical staff are unavailable. EMHs are standard on Starfleet ships but are meant to support the living medical crew, not replace it. The best-known EMH is the Doctor, played by Robert Picardo in Star Trek: Voyager.

An EMH that is used often can develop a richer personality over time. One author has observed that after Voyager, sentient holographic programs became a common idea in science fiction.
