"Assignment: Earth"

The episode "Assignment: Earth" was originally a television pilot for a proposed series about Gary Seven. In that pilot, Seven is a human from the 24th century undertaking a mission on Earth in 1968, described as "the only Earth man to survive the transit." His goal was to defeat the Omegans, shape-changing aliens who sent agents back in time to alter Earth's history. The pilot was later reworked as an episode of Star Trek, where Seven is instead a human raised on a distant planet.

Other Star Trek appearances

In Greg Cox's The Eugenics Wars novels, Gary Seven crosses paths with Khan Noonien Singh on multiple occasions, initially hoping to groom him as a replacement. Working alongside his partner Roberta Lincoln, Seven tries to prevent World War III through various efforts. He departs Earth in 1996 after placing Khan aboard the DY-100 sleeper ship SS Botany Bay. Cox's 1997 novel Assignment: Eternity reveals that the alien organization Seven serves is called the "Aegis," though it remains unclear if this name refers to the group itself or the species that runs it. Seven is referenced, though not seen, in the Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations: Watching the Clock novels and the 2017 novel Star Trek: The Next Generation: Hearts and Minds.

According to several 1990s DC Comics Star Trek issues by Howard Weinstein and Michael Jan Friedman, Seven and his cat Isis are agents of the Aegis, a force that recruits individuals from various worlds to selectively alter history. These agents receive extended lifespans, estimated at up to 1,000 years. Not all missions succeed; at least one agent ends up the sole survivor of his homeworld, sparking a small rebellion against the Aegis. Some agents go so far as to harm or kill innocent people.

Seven later defies the Aegis's orders by attempting to stop the Devidians from changing the timeline so the Romulans would defeat the Federation. He dies during an initial rescue attempt of Spock, but the Aegis pulls him from the timeline just before his death after Exana—another Aegis agent and Seven's romantic interest—stops the Devidians with help from Captain Kirk and Captain Picard. In 2008, IDW Publishing released an Assignment: Earth comic miniseries written and drawn by John Byrne.
