Molniya (rocket)

Soviet four-stage R-7 variant for planetary and Molniya satellite launches.

The Molniya (8K78) was a four-stage modification of the R-7 Semyorka, developed by the Korolev Bureau for launching planetary probes. It was named after the Molniya communication satellites it frequently carried. The rocket added a larger third stage and a fourth stage (Blok L) for in-orbit ignition to send payloads beyond low Earth orbit.
