Jack Vance’s science fiction novel *The Five Gold Bands* first appeared in the November 1950 issue of *Startling Stories* magazine. Three years later, in 1953, it was published as a standalone book under the title *The Space Pirate*. A 1963 Ace Double edition paired it with Vance’s Hugo Award-winning novella *The Dragon Masters*.
The story is set twenty generations after Earthman Langtry discovered an efficient method of interstellar travel. He split the secret among his five sons, each of whom settled on a different planet. Their descendants, called the Sons of Langtry, now rule the human universe. Life on those alien worlds has made each branch of the family visibly distinct from one another and from Earthlings, who are looked down upon on all five homeworlds.
The protagonist, an Irish adventurer named Paddy Blackthorn, is caught trying to steal a space drive and sentenced to death. During his escape, he accidentally kills the Sons of Langtry and takes from each a bracelet that holds a clue to one-fifth of the secret. With help from Fay Bursill, a beautiful human secret agent, Paddy follows the clues across the five dominant worlds, hoping to restore Earth’s rightful place in space.
Though an early work, the novel displays hallmarks of Vance’s later style: a colorful hero who stumbles into the greater good while frantically saving his own skin, exotic alien settings and species, and a treasure-hunt plot. It also introduces a recurring theme—that alien environments will reshape human colonists within a few generations until they are barely recognizable as human.
