The plot begins when an alien spaceship enters the Solar System and destroys harmless human ships, then wipes out a ragtag fleet of asteroid miners. All adult male members of Victor Delgado's extended clan die in the battle. Victor volunteers for a near-suicidal mission to reach Earth in a tiny, hastily converted unmanned cargo ship. He makes it to the Moon but cannot get authorities to take him seriously, leaving humanity unprepared for the First Formic War. The invading ship sends three enormous landing craft to southeast China; the Formics use gas to defoliate the area, and the Chinese government refuses outside help despite heavy losses. Before the landing, Mazer Rackham had been training the Chinese military on a new transport aircraft, the HERC. During the invasion, he saves an eight-year-old boy named Bingwen before his craft is shot down, and they set off to destroy a Formic lander. The Mobile Operations Police (MOP), a small elite international force, enters China without authorization. MOP Captain Wit O'Toole obtains a tactical nuclear weapon from anonymous Chinese officials who disagree with their government's stance, and they destroy the lander. Captain Shenzu then arrives and places Mazer under arrest. Meanwhile, Victor and Imala, a Customs Agent assigned to Victor, drift close to the Formic ship using a disguised ship provided by Lem Jukes. Victor breaks into the alien ship through a gun port.
