NCT 127 is the first permanent sub-unit of the boy band NCT, created by SM Entertainment. This group debuted in 2016 with seven members and is famous for its experimental hip-hop style, which they call 'neo music.' Background and name
In January 2016, SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man announced plans for a new boy group with an unlimited number of members and sub-units based in various cities worldwide. The group was named NCT, an acronym of the presentation title 'SMTOWN: New Culture Technology 2016.' NCT 127 was announced on July 1, 2016, as the second sub-unit, a Seoul-based multinational group. Its name combines 'NCT' with '127,' the longitude coordinate of Seoul.
History
All ten NCT 127 members were introduced through SM Rookies, a pre-debut training team. Johnny joined SM Entertainment in 2007 after an American audition; Yuta was recruited in Osaka in 2012; Mark joined from Vancouver the same year. Taeyong and Jaehyun were cast in 2012 and were the first SM Rookies introduced. Taeil joined in 2013, Doyoung and Donghyuck (Haechan) in 2013, Winwin in January 2016, and Jungwoo in April 2017. Before the unit's debut, members had solo activities: Taeyong appeared in Red Velvet's 'Be Natural' and the reality show Exo 90:2014; Doyoung and Jaehyun were MCs for Show Champion; Mark and Donghyuck were on Disney Channel Korea's The Mickey Mouse Club. The members held SMRookies Shows in Seoul and Bangkok. Taeil released a soundtrack in January 2016. Winwin danced for NCT U's 'The 7th Sense' in April 2016. The members starred in the reality series NCT Life. On July 1, 2016, Taeyong, Taeil, Jaehyun, Mark, Yuta, Winwin, and Haechan were confirmed as NCT 127's debut lineup.
