Making and release
The Playroom was preloaded on every PlayStation 4 and required the PlayStation Camera accessory to play.[3] Astro Bot Rescue Mission was a spin-off from a minigame in The Playroom VR called Robot Rescue.[4] Astro's Playroom was announced on June 11, 2020, and released on November 12, 2020, as a free pack-in game for every PlayStation 5.[5][6] Former Studio Liverpool employees founded Firesprite, and this studio handled the visual work for The Playroom.[7]

Japan Studio's final release before its April 2021 dissolution was Astro's Playroom.[6] PlayStation's 30th anniversary was the occasion for which this game was launched.[8]
What the cited sources add
The Android Central preview notes that Astro's Playroom serves as both a non-VR sequel to Rescue Mission and a demonstration of the DualSense controller.[4] The same source describes Astro as having a ton of personality, similar to Crash and Sonic.[4] Team Asobi spent years experimenting with the DualSense controller for Astro's Playroom.[9] The game includes power-up suits that give distinct abilities, such as a spring-loaded Jack-in-the-Box form.[4][9]
