Etelis carbunculus was first formally described in 1828 by French zoologist Georges Cuvier, with the type locality given as Mahé in the Seychelles. It was the only species in the genus Etelis at that time, making it the type species of that genus. The specific name carbunculus means 'ruby red precious stone,' a reference to the fish's reddish color. The species has a wide distribution across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Japan, Australia, Hawaii, and as far as the Manawatāwhi / Three Kings Islands off northern New Zealand.
