The queen snapper (Etelis oculatus) goes by the common names night snapper and brim snapper. It belongs to the ray-finned fish family Lutjanidae. This species stands out because it is the sole member of the genus Etelis that lives outside the Indo-Pacific region, with its home in the western Atlantic Ocean.
This fish has a long, slender, and streamlined body. Its head features a flat area between the eyes, large eyes, and a short snout where the lower jaw sticks out slightly. The jaws contain bands of small, cone-shaped teeth, with an outer row of larger, more widely spaced teeth. One or two pairs of canine teeth sit at the front of each jaw, and the vomerine teeth form a V-shaped or sometimes triangular patch. The dorsal fin has 10 spines and 11 soft rays, while the anal fin has 3 spines and 8 soft rays; the rearmost ray on each fin is the longest. Both the dorsal and anal fins lack scales. The tail fin is deeply forked, and its lobes grow longer as the fish ages. The pectoral fins are long and pointed, with either 17 or 19 rays. Medium-sized scales cover the body, and the scale rows on the back run parallel to the lateral line. The largest recorded total length is 100 cm (39 in), though 67 cm (26 in) is more typical. The back and upper flanks are a reddish deep pink, fading toward the belly. The spiny part of the dorsal fin and the caudal fin are brilliant red, while the other fins are pink. The large eyes are yellow with a red iris.
The queen snapper inhabits the warmer waters of the western Atlantic. Its range stretches from North Carolina south along the U.S. Atlantic coast, through the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, down to São Paulo in Brazil. It also appears at Bermuda, as well as Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha and Atol das Rocas Islands.
This bathydemersal species lives at depths between 100 and 450 m (330 and 1,480 ft). Adults stay over rocky substrates, feeding mainly on fish and squid. Juveniles are found in mid-water and eat crustaceans. Spawning occurs throughout most of the year, with a peak near the end of the year; spring is the period when these fish are not reproductively active.
French zoologist Achille Valenciennes first formally described the queen snapper in 1828, naming it *Serranus oculatus*. The type locality is Martinique.

The species is a quarry for commercial fisheries throughout its range, caught using hand lines, longlines, and traps. When brought to the surface, they suffer irreversible barotrauma, meaning most cannot be returned. They are subjected to severe fishing pressure, and it is almost certain that some populations are declining. Juveniles are taken as by-catch by trawlers. The queen snapper is regarded as an excellent food fish and is sold fresh and frozen. In waters off the southeastern United States, it is managed by the South Atlantic Fish Management Council, which applies a minimum size of 30 cm total length and a catch limit of 10 snappers of any species for both commercial and recreational Allowable Catch Limits. The Gulf of Mexico Fish Management Council includes this species within the 10 snapper per person aggregate limit in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, but does not set a minimum size limit or a season.

From Depletion to Protection
In the early 1980s, the waters surrounding Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker faced a dual crisis: fish populations were collapsing while visitor numbers swelled. The Hol Chan cut—a natural gap in the reef—became a flashpoint, drawing both commercial fishermen and recreational divers into conflict. Proposed bans on fishing were turned down, and it was not until the mid-1980s that formal public consultations on a marine protected area got underway. International bodies, including the New York Zoological Society and the Peace Corps, lent their voices, pointing to the channel's unique geology, its rich conch and lobster stocks, and the rare opportunity to link coral, seagrass, and mangrove habitats under one management umbrella. Between 1985 and 1987, environmentalist Janet Gibson mobilized citizens, local businesses, fishing communities, and the Belizean government around a shared vision. Her 1986 draft management plan laid the groundwork, and by July 1987 the reserve was officially established, backed by funding from WWF and USAID and approved by both the Fisheries ministry and the local fishermen's co-operative. Enforcement tightened in 1989, and entrance fees for the most sensitive zone began generating revenue in 1990.
A Mosaic of Habitats
Spanning roughly 18 square kilometres of coral reef, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forest off the coast of Belize, Hol Chan is organized into distinct zones that reflect the varied underwater terrain. The heart of the reserve is the Hol Chan Cut itself—a natural breach in the reef measuring about 23 metres across and 9 metres deep, with the name translating from Mayan as "little channel." Around this passage the water can drop to just 1.5 metres, while beyond the reef the channel slopes down into the open Caribbean. Zone B shelters Boca Ciega Blue Hole, a sinkhole that opens into a larger submerged cavern; its hazards keep most divers away. Zone C encompasses the mangrove swamps along southern Ambergris Caye. In 1999, Zone D—Shark Ray Alley—was added. This shallow, sandy-bottomed stretch was once where fishermen hauled in their nets and rinsed them, the scraps drawing sharks and stingrays to feed. Today, tour guides actively feed the animals, and the crystal-clear, shallow waters make it a prime snorkelling destination.
A Living Catalogue of Species
Because the Hol Chan Cut connects the inner reef to the open sea, it serves as a corridor for an extraordinary range of marine life. More than 160 fish species have been documented within the reserve, alongside forty kinds of coral, five sponge species, two types of seagrass, three sea-turtle species, and three marine mammals—the short-beaked common dolphin, the pantropical spotted dolphin, and the West Indian manatee. Spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays patrol the channel floor, while lobsters, moray eels, and sea anemones cling to rocky outcrops. Brain coral, elkhorn coral, and finger coral form part of the structural backbone, sheltering jack, grouper, snapper, and barracuda. The mangrove forests function as critical nurseries, hosting juvenile blue striped grunts, French grunts, white grunts, gray snappers, French and gray angelfish, and seahorses. In the seagrass beds, parrotfish and hogfish graze, with turtles making occasional appearances. Shark Ray Alley adds nurse sharks and additional ray species to the mix, rounding out one of the most biodiverse protected areas in the Caribbean.
Sustaining the Balance
Since 1994, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Trust Fund Committee has overseen operations, replacing an earlier informal advisory body. The reserve's operating budget is largely sustained by visitor entrance fees for Zones A and D, collected not directly from tourists but through an annual licensing scheme applied to tour-guide boats. WWF financial support, which helped launch the project, ended in 1995. The founding charter set four pillars: preserving the coral reef ecosystem, balancing recreation with continued fisheries utility, enabling education and research, and safeguarding genetic resources. While fish stocks have since rebounded, the local fishing industry has continued to contract. The committee also confronts threats beyond its jurisdiction, notably the clearing of mangroves and other habitats in neighbouring areas. A growing tourist trade boosts revenue but strains the infrastructure of nearby San Pedro and Caye Caulker, and the sheer volume of visitors now poses a direct risk to the health of the coral itself.
