Year of No Light was founded in September 2001 in Bordeaux by Johan Sébenne, Bertrand Sébenne, Jérôme Alban, and Christophe Mora. After Mora left in 2002, Pierre Anouilh joined. The band played local shows from 2002 to 2003. In September 2003, Julien Perez joined as vocalist. Their 2004 demo earned positive feedback, with one review describing them as 'The Cure playing Sludge.' They recorded their debut album Nord in 2005 with Serge Morattel in Switzerland, releasing it in 2006 to positive reviews. The album combined a dark, aggressive sludge metal sound with psychedelic atmospheres inspired by post-rock and shoegazing.

In 2008, after touring Europe and playing Roadburn and Hellfest, the band discarded their singer. By the end of summer 2008, they became a six-piece instrumental entity with two drummers, one bassist, and three guitarists, backed by vintage synths. Shiran Kaïdine (from Monarch!) and Mathieu Mégemont (from Aérôflôt) joined as third guitarist and second drummer, respectively. This lineup recorded Ausserwelt in 2009, released in 2010, and Tocsin in 2013, integrating black metal, doom metal, drone, and dark ambient influences. The band also created live soundtracks for Dreyer's Vampyr and worked with artist Christian Vialard on Le Temps de l'Ecoute. In 2014, they toured the U.S. for the first time as a five-piece due to guitarist Pierre Anouilh's visa issues. Shiran Kaïdine died from cancer on 17 April 2022, at age 44.
