Tropico 6

Build an island nation as El Presidente in a fully simulated Caribbean.

Tropico 6

Tropico 6 is a construction, management, and political simulation game, part of the Tropico series. It was created by Limbic Entertainment and published by Kalypso Media. The game was first shown at E3 2017 and came out for Windows, macOS, and Linux in March 2019. Later that year, in September, it arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version followed in November 2020, and versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S launched in March 2022. It became the fastest-selling entry in the series, earning 50% more at launch than Tropico 5 did.

In the game, players take on the role of El Presidente, the ruler of the Caribbean island nation of Tropico. Like in Tropico 5, there are four eras to play through: the Colonial era, the World Wars era, the Cold War era, and the modern era. A new feature lets players build on a chain of smaller islands instead of just one. From the World Wars era onward, bridges can connect the starting island to others in the archipelago. According to senior content designer Johannes Pfeiffer, citizens are now "fully simulated," meaning the government's actions can affect their productivity and even spark a revolt. Players can customize El Presidente as male or female and also design the presidential palace.

Unlike earlier Tropico games, Tropico 6 does not have a single overarching campaign. Only the first mission—where El Presidente secures independence from the Crown and meets Penultimo—and the last mission—where the player defends Tropico from British aristocrat Lord Roger Wyndham and destroys his weather control machine—are linear. All other missions take place at unspecified times, sometimes acknowledging the first mission as canon.

The game received "generally positive" reviews on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, according to Metacritic, while the Switch port got "mixed or average" scores. CGM called it the "strongest entry in the franchise," praising its music, graphics, and writing, despite minor bugs and jank. Shacknews lauded its addictive gameplay, clear UI, detail, strategic options, and comedy, but noted repetitive music and a sometimes cluttered main screen. Push Square said the console port was "one of PlayStation 4's best strategy games" and "one of its most unique," praising the music, varied objectives, and fun gameplay, though objective clarity was a frustration.

Lore & Background

The player assumes the role of El Presidente, leader of the Caribbean island nation of Tropico. The game features four eras: Colonial, World Wars, Cold War, and modern. Unlike previous entries, Tropico 6 allows building on an archipelago of smaller islands, with bridges connecting them from the World Wars era onward. Citizens are fully simulated, and government actions can affect productivity or trigger revolts. Players can customize El Presidente as male or female and also customize the presidential palace.

Reader's Guide

Tropico 6 departs from earlier series entries by lacking an overarching campaign; only the first mission (securing independence and meeting Penultimo) and the last mission (defeating Lord Roger Wyndham's weather control machine) are linear, with other missions set at unspecified times. Reception was generally positive on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, while the Switch port received mixed or average reviews. Critics praised the music, graphics, writing, addictive gameplay, crisp UI, strategic depth, and comedic tone, but noted minor bugs, repetitive music, and occasional lack of objective clarity. The Switch version drew criticism for subpar graphics and performance issues. The game was called the strongest entry in the franchise by CGM and one of PlayStation 4's best strategy games by Push Square. A sequel, Tropico 7, is set for release in 2026.
