Lore & Background

Sine Mora takes place on the planet Seol, whose unstable crust causes frequent quakes that reshape its geography. Two factions are locked in the Eternal War: the Layil Empire and the Atarach Kingdom of the Enkie race. The Enkie possess the ability to manipulate time, but the Empire develops a machine called the Project, capable of accelerating time flow to erase objects or beings from existence. The game features two parallel plots set at different points in time. One follows Ronotra Koss, a father seeking revenge on the Empire that executed his son, Argus Pytel, for refusing to drop a nuclear bomb on the Enkie capital. The other follows Akyta Dryad and surviving Enkie resistance fighters launching guerrilla attacks to stop the Project. A twist reveals that Argus Pytel engineered both resistance groups' missions, and that he accidentally killed his own father. The alternate narrative offers a different ending to these events.

Reader's Guide

Sine Mora was well received by critics, who praised its shoot 'em up mechanics, time-based system, boss battles, and visuals, though the story was found confusing. The game is marketed as a bullet hell shooter and offers four difficulties: normal, challenging, hard, and insane. It includes four game modes: Story, Arcade, Score Attack, and Boss Training. Instead of traditional health, each level has a set amount of time that ticks down; taking damage speeds up the timer, while eliminating enemies adds time. Players can choose from multiple characters and planes, each with unique attributes that combine to determine statistics. The extended version, Sine Mora EX, was announced as a surprise at PAX East 2017 and released later that year for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who developed Sine Mora?

The game was created through a partnership between Digital Reality and Grasshopper Manufacture. It debuted on Xbox 360 on March 21, 2012, before rolling out to additional platforms.

How does Sine Mora's health system work?

Rather than a conventional hit-point bar, the game tracks your survival with a countdown timer that serves as your life gauge. You continue fighting until that clock hits zero, which reframes every encounter around managing time pressure instead of dodging to preserve HP.

What is Sine Mora EX?

Sine Mora EX is an extended edition of the original title, unveiled in 2017. It expands on the 2012 release with additional content and refinements while keeping the core side-scrolling shooter formula.

What platforms can I play Sine Mora on?

The game shipped on Xbox 360 and Windows at launch, then expanded to PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Ouya. It is a 2.5D side-scrolling shooter available across console, handheld, and mobile ecosystems.

What is the setting and visual style of Sine Mora?

The game is set in a diesel punk world where the playable cast consists of anthropomorphic characters rather than humans. Its aesthetic pairs gritty industrial machinery with stylized animal-based designs, giving it a look distinct from most other shooters.
